This comic is a parody of Pokémon, in this particular case Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. In the game you get what is basically a cell phone that lets people you have met in the game send you messages. Most of the messages are entirely useless, but fairly innocuous. However Joey, the first kid you get the number for in the game is the worst offender in my mind. While many of the trainers you meet will grow in strenght and periodically call you back for rematches, Joey never seems to grow at all, which make his constant calls all the more annoying.
On the more technical side of this comic has several examples of advanced shading, and layered transparencies to give the illusion of smoke, fire and mist.
